In 2007, as part of our tribute to the beneficial insects that roam Canada's gardens and marshes, homage was paid to the cecropia moth, Canada darner, Northern bumblebee, the golden-eyed lacewing and convergent lady beetle, which is better known as the ladybug.

About the golden-eyed lacewing

The golden-eyed lacewing is an increasingly critical component of integrated pest management (IPM) programs used for field and horticultural crops. Often found fluttering slowly around a front porch light, this insect, with its thin, bright-green body and sweeping, translucent wings, is a gentle friend to humans. Since the larvae of the lacewings are voracious predators to a wide variety of soft-bodied insects, insect eggs and spiders, they are used as an alternative to pesticides.

About the design

Designed and illustrated by Keith Martin, these playful stamps feature the golden-eyed lacewing. The insect's bright green body appears against a vivid mauve background. The delicate veins of the bug's ethereal translucent wings are meticulously rendered and capture a sense of serenity. The lacewing's Latin name, Chrysopa oculata, is printed in white italic letters in the top right corner. Dark edges fade into a unified border, framing the illustration and allowing the 50 stamps to blend into one another on the pane.
