Let time reveal itself on this fine silver coin, our new sundial.

Add another timepiece to your coin collection! Our new sundial coin crafted in 99.99% pure silver features a reverse design that celebrates exploration and the beauty of time measured in light. Classic Roman numerals mark the hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. along the perimeter, anchored by an acanthus-leaf flourish, while decorative botanical motifs form an inner ring around a stylized globe. At the centre of it all, a compass rose sits beneath the angled rhodium-plated gnomon that casts a shadow across its coin base, indicating local solar time when placed in direct sunlight and pointed in the direction of true north.

Good to know

A new sundial. The follow-up to 2024’s The Sundial, this 1 oz. 99.99% pure silver coin is adorned with a cast embellishment that transforms the engraved reverse into a functional sundial for mid-northern latitudes.

Exploration and discovery. Replacing the sunflower theme from the first sundial coin, this new sundial design invites you to embrace your spirit of exploration and discovery, represented by the globe and the compass rose.

A 3D embellishment. Standing upright on your coin’s reverse, the 3D gnomon—the angled pointer on a sundial—is cast in brass and rhodium-plated to complement the coin base’s ornate design.

Interactive design. To use your coin as a sundial, place it on a flat surface in direct sunlight and with the gnomon pointing north. Take note of where the shadow’s outer edge lines up, and that should indicate the approximate local solar time. (Like any sundial, some additional adjustments may be required due to longitude and the time of year.)

Specially encapsulated. Each coin has been carefully placed inside a taller capsule that can accommodate the additional height of the gnomon.

Low mintage. Only 7,000 sundial coins are available to collectors worldwide—order today!

Includes serialized certificate. The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins.

Did you know?

A sundial’s gnomon must be angled to match Earth’s axis, which is why sundials calibrated for mid-northern latitudes (like this coin) won’t read correctly near the equator or in the southern hemisphere. Also, the gnomon must point towards true north (the North Pole), not magnetic north.

About the design

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a black Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box.

Your sundial coin’s reverse was designed by Canadian artist Jori van der Linde. Roman numerals indicating the hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. form an outer ring along the perimeter, anchored by an ornate acanthus-leaf flourish, while a repeating botanical motif surrounds a stylized globe. The celebration of exploration and discovery continues at the centre of the design, where a compass rose supports the rhodium-plated, brass gnomon that casts a shadow onto the engraved dial plate, indicating local solar time. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
