Coin #4: Last stop on the Canada’s National Parks tour!

Our tour concludes in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region, where more than a thousand limestone islets and islands lie just off the northern shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, opposite Anticosti Island. The Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve (MANPR) is located on Nitassinan, the traditional lands of the Innu people and home to the Ekuanitshit and Nutashkuan First Nations for thousands of years.

The archipelago is best known as the site of Canada’s largest concentration of erosion monoliths, towering rock pillars continuously shaped by water, wind and time. Accessible by boat, its islands invite visitors to let the ocean set the rhythm as they explore breathtaking scenery and discover the rich biodiversity of this coastal chain, protected since 1984 as part of Canada’s vast network of safeguarded natural spaces.

The Gulf of St. Lawrence is the final stop.

Did you know?

Stretching along the Gulf of St. Lawrence coastline between the Quebec communities of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan and Aguanish, Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve was established in 1984 to protect a natural area representative of the Eastern St. Lawrence Lowlands.

The park reserve is renowned for its seabird populations. Approximately 200 bird species have been recorded in the area, while more than 80,000 seabirds feed and nest in colonies throughout the islands.

Although the limestone bedrock is more than 450 million years old, the region’s famous monoliths were formed through changing sea levels associated with glacial retreat roughly 10,000 years ago and continue to be sculpted by wind, waves, freezing and thawing.

About the design

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a black Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box.

Designed by Innu artist Jean-Luc Hervieux, the reverse invites you to sit back and enjoy the view from Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve, located off Quebec’s North Shore along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The design showcases the park’s remarkable concentration of monoliths through a depiction of the famous Bonne Femme formation, situated on Île Niapiskau, one of the reserve’s many islands and islets.

Selective colour highlights the surrounding landscape and, in the foreground, two red Adirondack chairs—an iconic feature of Canada’s national parks. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
