Simulating the on-site experience. The engraved design features a stylized collage of different views from the CN Tower’s observation deck, rendered in a sketchbook art style to evoke the feeling of being at the top and spontaneously sketching the city below. These are some of the views that attract nearly two million visitors each year!

Contrasting art styles. The collage’s hand-drawn style contrasts with the more realistic rendering of the CN Tower and Toronto skyscrapers in the foreground, adding depth and dimension to the design.

Completed in 1975 and opened to the public in 1976, the CN Tower rises 553.33 metres above Toronto’s skyline, a remarkable feat of engineering that held the title of the world’s tallest freestanding structure for over three decades. In 2007, the Tower gained a new glow with the addition of an advanced LED lighting system capable of producing over 16 million colours. Seamlessly integrated into its design, these lights transform the landmark into a vibrant beacon each night, illuminating in symbolic hues to celebrate Canadian culture, charitable causes, and moments of national pride.

“This one was a tricky one! Rectangular coins require low relief near the corners to ensure proper metal flow during striking. The cityscape design was packed with overlapping buildings, but without enough depth to sculpt them realistically, I created angled planes in a sort of puzzle-like arrangement to give the illusion of dimension. It was also interesting to merge the artist’s intention of a hand-drawn sketch with the sharp, precise edges of sculpted architecture. I enjoyed the challenges this project presented and can’t wait to see the final coin!”

About the design

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box.

The reverse design by Canadian artist Steve Hepburn features the CN Tower at its centre, bordered by neighbouring architecture in the foreground and set against a stylized collage of different views from the Tower’s observation deck. The years “1976” and “2026” commemorate the 50^th anniversary of its opening to the public. Under UV black light, the CN Tower is illuminated in Canada’s national colours—red and white—and shines as a proud emblem of Toronto, a testament to Canadian engineering, and a beacon of national pride. The obverse features an encircling line pattern echoing the CN Tower’s vertical rise and Toronto’s dynamic skyline, and the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
