About snowflakes

The first snowfall of the holiday season is a magical moment when a sky full of flakes decorates the world in a blanket of white. What is breathtakingly beautiful is even more so up close.

Each snowflake that falls is one of a kind, with no two said to be identical. Snow or ice crystals, as they are also known, all begin the same way – it’s their journey through the clouds that makes them unique. A crystal forms when water vapour attaches to an atmospheric particle, such as dust or pollen. As it drifts earthward, more vapour binds to its surface, transforming it into an intricate and often symmetrical six-sided structure. The variations in temperature and humidity that the crystal encounters along its path influence its appearance, creating everything from lacy, fantastical stars to elaborate hexagons, prisms, needles and columns.

Snowflakes vary in size from a fraction of a millimetre to a centimetre wide. Based on super-macro photography, the illustrations on this year’s holiday stamps capture the profound beauty of these tiny works of art.

About the design

This stamp issue was designed by Vedran Vaskovic and illustrated by Manantsoa Razafimandimby.
The stamp illustrations are based on super-macro photographs of actual snowflakes. Photographer Don Komarechka uses a black mitten to catch the snowflakes and serve as the background for his photos. He uses a fine-tipped paintbrush to isolate a single snow crystal, which he then shoots using a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens, several extension tubes and a ring flash.
These stamps feature multi-faceted snowflakes in icy-blue hues set against a blanket of white.
The front cover features a frosty blue design with multi-faceted geometric shapes, snowflakes and bilingual text.
The booklet includes ten stamps on an icy-blue background with geometric shapes.
